Questions people ask

Can I use my brand before it is registered?

Yes, and you can add ™ to show you claim it. Only use ® once the registration certificate is issued.

What is a class?

Trademarks are registered for classes of goods and services under the international Nice Classification. Your mark is protected in the classes you file in, so we help you choose the ones that match what you sell.

How long does a registration last?

Seven years from the filing date. It can then be renewed for 14 years at a time, for as long as you keep using the mark.

Does registering in Nigeria protect me in other countries?

No. Intellectual property rights are territorial, so a Nigerian registration protects you in Nigeria. If you sell abroad, ask us about filing in those countries too.

Should I keep my idea secret until you file?

For patents and designs, yes. Showing it publicly before filing can mean it no longer counts as new. For trademarks and copyright, it does not matter.
